Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
